"Breaking the seal" is Real & Leads to Dehydration

January 6, 2023 · By Brian Wilder

"Breaking the seal" is a colloquial term that refers to the need to urinate after consuming alcohol. Many people believe that once they start to drink alcohol, they will need to urinate more frequently, and that each time they urinate, it will be more difficult to "hold it" until the next time.

The term "breaking the seal" is often used to describe the first time someone needs to urinate after drinking alcohol, but it is a myth that the body's ability to "hold it" decreases with each subsequent urination. The need to urinate after drinking alcohol is actually due to the diuretic effect of alcohol, which increases urine production and can lead to dehydration.

It's important to note that while the need to urinate may increase after consuming alcohol, this does not mean that the body's ability to hold urine decreases. The urinary system is not "sealed" and is able to function normally, regardless of alcohol consumption.

While it is important to stay hydrated and to urinate when the body needs to, it is also important to drink alcohol in moderation. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a number of negative effects on the body, including dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
